Compassion is related to the concepts of sympathy, consolation and solace. It is about life in all its different aspects. Death is an integral part of this. In death we all are equal, so we say, but in fact this is also the case in life. Only by being aware of this is it possible to feel compassion.
Compassion is most clearly felt in emergency situations, when someone is having a difficult time; for example, the loss of a beloved one, or in situations of violence or war. One can have compassion for certain victims and feel the urge to express this and fly the Flag. However, we are also able to feel compassion for less grand events, under conditions of normal daily life.
If you ask someone to think about compassion, he or she has to think about themselves, another and the other. The notion of compassion contains the relation with yourself, another and the other.
